Exemption from the Semester Ticket

In principle, all students receive a semester ticket. Guest students, students in evening, distance and online or part-time courses of study are excluded from this.

The semester ticket is a solidarity ticket. This means that all students pay for the semester ticket, but do not use it in the same way (like your health insurance). It is not possible to demand a refund because you live as an individual e.g. close to the university and therefore do not depend on the ticket. This is the only way the solidarity principle can work.

Full reimbursement of the GVH semester ticket and the statewide semester ticket is made directly by the university for the following groups:

  • Students on leave of absence
  • Dual enrolled students within the GVH area of validity
  • Dual enrolled students within the area of validity of the state-wide semester ticket (only reimbursement of the fee for the state-wide semester ticket)
  • Severely disabled students who are entitled to free transportation according to § 145 of the Ninth Book of the German Social Code (SGB IX) and can prove that the transportation entitlement exists for the entire semester according to SGB IX. An exemption from the semester ticket due to an entitlement to transportation by a severely disabled person’s ID will be taken over by the Enrollment Office.

The complete subsequent exemption of the GVH semester ticket and the statewide semester ticket is handled by the AStA for the following groups:

  • Students who voluntarily spend more than 120 consecutive calendar days of the respective semester outside the area of validity for study purposes, e.g. for an internship, to study abroad or to obtain a doctorate. In order to do so, please fill out the following form and present it to the AStA together with your supporting documents. Proofs are e.g. an internship contract, employment contract or a certificate of the employer. Sensitive data such as salaries or vacation regulations is to be blacked out in advance in the case of contracts. In the case of a doctorate, we require a certificate from the supervising teacher stating the reason, place and period of absence for study-related reasons. In case of a semester abroad longer than 120 consecutive days, a certificate from the university (Learning Agreement). In the case of the 120-day regulation, the deadline for the last submission of an application is one month after the start of lectures of the respective semester.
  • Students in obligatory practical and/or study abroad semesters. i.e. your course of studies must include a semester in a company or at another university, a corresponding certificate from the cooperating university or company. In this case, we can only reimburse the portion of the statewide semester ticket.

Please read the conditions carefully before submitting an application. If you want to apply, please send your semester ticket to the AStA. If you have questions that are not answered here, please contact us at mobilitaet[ät]asta-hannover.de.

The full refund can be applied for from the time the student card can be validated for the respective semester until one month after the start of lectures.

Partial refund due to exmatriculation:

If you exmatriculate up to one month after the start of lectures, you do not have to apply for a refund to the AStA. The refund will be made by the university. After that, only a partial refund on a monthly basis is possible. The amount of the partial refund depends on the duration of use. E.g. in case of exmatriculation until the end of the 2nd month (31.05./30.11.): 150,28 € | 3rd month 55,57 € | 4th month: 46,57 € | 5th month: 37,57 €..
